Outdoor adventures for your family

Nov 13, 2018

It’s easy to get excited about outdoor activities during the warm summer months, but for many of us, spending time in nature can lose its appeal when temperatures turn colder. You may think that hibernation is the best option until spring arrives, however, if you bundle up for the weather, fall is actually a wonderful season to enjoy outdoor family fun.

Here are some fall family fun ideas:

  • Go on a nature scavenger hunt - let the kids help come up with items to look for.
  • Make a fort in your backyard - be creative with materials to build with.
  • Have a bonfire with hot apple cider or hot cocoa and s’mores.
  • Make a big pile of leaves - then jump in them - yes, grown ups too!
  • Go on a family bike ride or walk - stop at a park for a game of catch or frisbee.
  • Visit an orchard or farmer’s market.
  • Take pictures - or draw pictures - in nature.
  • Decorate your porch - incorporate your scavenger hunt items (pine cones, leaves etc.).
  • Go on a wagon ride or find your way through a corn maze.
  • Plant bulbs that will grow in spring - or plant a tree.
  • Collect leaves of different shapes, sizes and colours - arrange them into art.
  • Grab your GPS and try geocaching to find hidden objects.
  • Visit a zoo - will be less crowded than in summer and many animals are actually more active in the cooler weather.
  • Preparing for outdoor adventures may take some extra time, but putting on those jackets, toques, and mittens will be well worth the effort!

Kids Inc. campers take part in many outdoor activities that allow opportunities to get fresh air and exercise, be creative, and learn to appreciate nature. We encourage you to get outside for some family fun this season!
